On the road

Weekend Workshop at Yoga Nest in Venice, CA: What Is Yoga?: For most of us in America, yoga is a physical activity that we do at the gym. But in Asia, yoga has evolved over thousands of years, and has meant many different things to many different people. For three days we will immerse ourselves in experiential learning, tasting a wide spectrum of yogic scriptures and teachings. Be prepared to be surprised! One thing is guaranteed: your understanding and experience of the power of yoga will be deepened.

Guest ministry at  First Unitarian Church of Honolulu: Educating the Heart

Sermon: Love and the limbic brain: We usually associate love with the heart, but modern research suggests that human relationship is rooted in the limbic brain. This sermon celebrates the mysterious polarities of love and reason, science and religion, head and heart.

Sermon: Dancing on the enemy’s grave: lessons learned from an enemy encounter: Next week marks the 5th anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden, a time when some Americans danced in the streets. What happens when we celebrate our anger? How can each of us more skillfully negotiate our most challenging relationships?

Sermon: Reconciliation: healing the broken heart: The Buddha taught that suffering is inevitable. But our hearts also carry the capacity for healing. What is the alchemical power that transforms our brokenness into wholeness? Drawing on lessons learned on her journey toward healing, Karen will lead us in a fearless encounter with our own life stories.

Workshop: Educating the Heart: In all of her Sunday sermons, Karen has been focusing on the benefits of cultivating our emotional intelligence. Drawing on all three of the themes that Karen preached on — the power of loving compassion, our attitude toward our difficult relationships, and healing our broken hearts – we will listen for the wisdom inherent within our own life stories. This workshop will be very helpful to those interested in cultivating the skill of sermon development. Reading this short essay will help support you in getting the most out of this workshop.
