Assignments for June

In order to get the most benefit from our time together in class, please make sure that you have done ALL of the readings and excercises listed below BEFORE our first class together on Tuesday, June 19th. Read, contemplate, practice, and most important of all… ENJOY!

Starting from where we are: What is yoga?

The Sacred Duty of Offering: The Vedas and Yajna

Retreat into the forest: The Upanishads and Brahman

Stilling the body, stilling the mind: Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras

How to talk to an avatar: Krishna and Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita

For the love of the God/dess: bhakti, the path of devotion

The Indian philosophical tradition is very much like a conversation: each tradition is responding to the previous traditions. Sometimes later traditions agree with and adopt previous ways of thinking and practicing. Sometimes they disagree strongly, and resist certain ideas, ritual practices, and institutions.

We are studying these traditions in the historical order in which they arose in India. Please do all of the readings and practice assignments in the order in which they are given. Try to do the readings, do the practices associated with each assignment, and journal about your own response to what you have learned, before moving on to the next assignment.
