ESSAY: DUE ON SUNDAY, MARCH 6

Choose ONE of the following two topics:

1) Explain the terms puruṣa and prakṛti.  How do they relate to Yogasūtra 1.2?

2) What is Yoga in the Yogasūtra?  Using references to the YS text, explain Yoga in terms of its goals, practice, and dispassion/detachment.

EXTRA CREDIT: Write an additional paragraph (up to 250 words) about a section of the text (an individual sūtra or a small set of sūtras) that you find particularly interesting. Explain the meaning of the sūtra(s) according to Barbara Miller’s commentary, other commentary you may have read, and class notes.  Also explain why you chose this section.  –Make sure you reference the work you are using to support your understanding of the sūtra(s).

FORMATTING YOUR PAPER: Follow the same guidelines as used for the first paper.  The essay should be approximately 450-500 words.

REFERENCE THE YOGASŪTRAS IN YOUR ESSAY:  In your essay, reference the page number AND the particular sūtras with the chapter and sūtra number.  Example: the
second sūtra of the first book is 1.2 – “Yoga is the cessation of the turnings of thought.”
This would be referenced as follows: (pg. 29; YS 1.2).  MAKE SURE TO REFERENCE THE
TEXT WHENEVER YOU ARE DISCUSSING A PARTICULAR IDEA OR SUTRA FROM THE TEXT.
You don’t need to write out the entire quotation, just provide a reference.

References to class notes are as follows: (Class notes, date).
References to another translation is as follows: (Bryant, pg. 10, YS 1.2).
